Making Democracy Work

About the League

Our Mission and Roles

Join the League Now!
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose candidates for office, or political parties, and any use of the League of Women Voters name in campaign advertising or literature has not been authorized by the League.

The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.

  • Voters Service/Citizen Education: we present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.

  • Action/Advocacy: we are also nonpartisan, but, after study, we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest.

To conduct our voter service and citizen education activities, we use funds from the League of Women Voters Education Fund, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational organization. The League of Women Voters, a membership organization, conducts action and advocacy and is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) corporation.

Our Vision, Beliefs, and Intentions guide our activities.

History of the League of Women Voters

Our Local Programs

The League of Women Voters Arapahoe and Douglas Counties presents a wide array of programs. An important part of our mission is to inform our membership and the public at large. We strive to scrupulously maintain an attitude of neutrality.

At the core of our programs are Unit Meetings. These meetings (which also include a segment devoted to the business of league organization), include a segment devoted to issues, both local and national. We bring in local experts, often including Leaguers themselves, to speak to the issue, followed by an audience/speaker open discussion.

We also present Public Programs on public policy issues, usually with speakers who represent a variety of viewpoints to insure a balanced presentation. However, we also present advocacy programs when League has taken a position on the top of the forum issue.

On Target Programs are open to our members and their guests. These programs are geared to respond quickly to any issue that is creating headlines now! Once again, we strive to present all perspectives when possible.

The Program Committee is vital to the League. We welcome your participation. If you are interested or have any questions, contact Sonya Pennock, Program Chair at email.
